Retro Diary – Xbox Week Part 1.5

Continuation from last week’s blog. I played through my brother’s Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 story, the one he was creating using entirely goals made from the Create-A-Goal feature in the game… for something that was created out of the blue in 2 days using something that basically made things like character development or actual story events impossible, it’s […] ...To receive more of these posts, you should follow my new blog, over at wordpress, the link is: http://ift.tt/2rbL9Yr

Retro Diary – 02/07/16

It’s been a long time since I’ve done one of these, eh? (2 years, in fact!) Well, I’ve decided to bring this series back, but this time, I’m going to do them whenever I like, and on days where anything of interest happened in terms of retro gaming in my life, such as today! Retro Diary - 19/8/12

Monday 13th August 2012

Batman Arkham Asylum arrived today! It's just as awesome as the demo made it out to be! I've been playing that all day.

Tuesday 14th August 2012

Quoted from the Retro Pick-Ups video posted that day: I was spending the day with my friend, as a sort of birthday get together, as his birthday was coming up, while we were out, we went to CEX, which a store that people bring old games, CDs and DVDs and they sell them, my cousin, Giancarlo, goes in there a lot, and says it's a great store, so I went in, and disappointingly, it was mostly PS3 and Xbox 360 games, I managed to find a section that had 6th gen console and PC games, so I browsed around that part for over half an hour.

I got 007 Nightfire on both PC and Gamecube, because I heard that the PC version was cut-down from the console versions, but I wanted to try it anyway, it was only 75p anyway, so why not? The Gamecube version was £1.50.

I also got Reservoir Dogs on the PC for £1.50, I'm a big fan of the film, I have it on DVD, have it's soundtrack ripped to my PC (Turns out my dad used to have it, well, we found it at our old house.), and I always wanted to play the game, now was my chance.

Lastly, I got RC Revenge Pro on the PS2, just because I can!

Nightfire on the Gamecube was brilliant, it got every right, it's not as good as Goldeneye, but it's definitely up there! The PC version, however, is actually kind of rubbish, they've changed the game completely! The only thing that remained is the story, and even then, many scenes have changed, everything else is completely different.

Reservoir Dogs was badly optimised and was an extremely shoddy console port, but it's good fun in my opinion, so I'll probably be playing it to the very end.

I've still to play RC Revenge Pro, I want to get and complete the original RC Revenge on the PS1 first

Wednesday 15th August 2012

I tried out a demo of Need for Speed Underground 2 on the PC, owning it on the PS2 and Xbox wasn't enough for me!

Well in all honestly, I loved the game, but didn't like how it ran slow and looked rather blurry, after realising there was a PC version, it shouldn't have surprised, need for speed originated on the PC and 3DO and every game in the series is available on PC.

It was much better than the console versions in my opinion, it runs much faster, you can turn all the blurring effects off! However, it doesn't support widescreen resolution, but the beauty of PC gaming is the modding community, and low and behold, there exist patches (user created), that make it support whatever resolution you want, so I installed one, and it looks great!

Thursday 16th August 2012

I got a pack of 3 games today, all Codemasters racing games, all with creative titles, they are DiRT, GRID and FUEL!

The awesome things about DiRT and GRID are that when it comes to selecting your profile, you get to choose your nationally, and you can choose to be Scottish! Finally, games that acknowledges us a separate country! The games are a lot of fun as well, I had a bit of trouble running DiRT at first, but once I was sorted, I was off!

Saturday 18th August 2012

I got a Need for Speed Collector's Pack today, which contained Need for Speed Underground 1 & 2 and Most Wanted, I've only played the Underground games, I loved them both on the consoles, and it's only made better on the PC because of the higher framerate and the ability to turn off those annoying blur effects, the only downsides to them is that don't support widescreen resolutions, so I get thick black bars on each side, but you get used to it.

Saturday 19th August 2012

It was PS1 week this week, and Steven couldn't come, and Giancarlo had to move all of his stuff to his new flat, and only had time to play a game for 5 minutes. Basically, like every other week recently, everyone's either not present or don;t have the time.

I played a bit of Jinx and Formula 1, then me and Giancarlo had a few games of Tekken 3, then he played a game of Vib Ribbon.

After that, he had to leave, is it me or are we not playing games nearly as often as we did when I started this?

I'll see next week if we get time to play next week's consoles (I'm leaving it to my cousins), to see if the time and effort put into packing them and setting them up is worth it.

Retro Diary - 24/6/12 - "This-Game's-Great!"

Monday 18th June 2012

I finally got around to playing the Browser version of Plants vs. Zombies, and I really enjoyed it, the Game of the Year edition of the game is only £5 brand new on Amazon, so I suppose it's a why not, I'm getting it!

My PC got sent off to get fixed today, well, I hope they actually fix it, I have a gut feeling they'll just send it back, broken...

Tuesday 19th June 2012

My MDickie compilation DVD arrived! I was expecting the Disc to contain absolutely, pretty much like it was claimed to, but sadly, it didn't, a few DOS games and the original version of the 3D Big Bumpz was missing, I've downloaded the rest, as they're all free, but it would've been nice if they were on the DVD as well.

However, I found that the DVD contained 2 mods to his popular Wrestling Mpire 2008, one of them being called "The Wrestling Channel 4: Fight!", which featured far improved graphics and presentation, and the game had a better atmosphere too, I can honestly say that this is the best wrestling game on the PC now, it'd be awesome of Matt Dickie himself and the team and modded it joined forced to make a sequel, how awesome would that be!?

So yeah I've been playing that, even if it runs like crap on my laptop, I want my PC so bad...

Thursday 21st June 2012

My sister came up to my room to play some Mega Drive, she reached the same spot before getting bored, she keeps saying to me she'll come over and we could complete it like we did with Sonic 2, but never does, I'd be lucky if she even comes up to play it half the time.

I've just noticed, my brothers have nearly finished school, which sucks, I was hoping to spend those extra weeks off by playing some awesome PC games while my brothers are at school and aren't here to annoy me, but my luck doesn't want any of that, and my PC broken down, seriously, why me!?

I suppose on the bright side, I haven't heard anything back from ASUS, no "we can't fix your PC", or any of that crap, so I suppose no news is good news, but I have a feel it's still just in a very long line of PC that are to be inspected, and I bet knowing my luck, it's be weeks until they finally get to my PC and say "Sorry, we can't fix it!", making all of that time, waiting for it to get "fixed" gone to complete waste!

I saw Wolfenstein 3D + Spear of Destiny on eBay, and as a bonus, that particular copy also included Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, all on PC... Ordered!

I was once looking at a "Let's Play", or rather a "Retsupurae", which makes fun of bad Let's Plays, and found one on Ultimate Doom, so I decided to look at it, and saw that this guys copy ran faster, had a different HUD, and was running on a bigger resolution, I thought, "Wait, how come my copy isn't as good!?".

It turns out, he had a mod put in which makes all those improvements and more into all the Doom games, it's called Z-Doom, called so because you can look up and down, unlike the original, I tried it out, and it was like upgrading a computer or to a new computer, you suddenly get a massive improvement in performance! I was in awe playing it, the resolution could go much bigger, and therefore looked so much sharper and clearer, it ran much faster, the new HUD rules, and tonnes more, I practically fell in love!

Later on, I was browsing for my games because I was bored and wanted something to play, then I discovered a few PC games I've had for years, but never played, one of them being a £1 budget game called "Winter games", I decided to try it out.

I've tried other budget games published by the same people, and they were quite enjoyable considering they're only £1, but this one sucked!

However, I discovered trial games that came free with the game, one of them being "Brick Buster", which is a 3D breakout game, I decided to give it a try, and I really, really enjoyed it, so I looked it up online to see if I could find a copy cheap.

You can download the game, it costs £10, which is outrages, however, on eBay, I found a retail copy which also came with another game, and that was less than £2, seriously, why do people digitally download games these days?

Physical copies are usually cheaper, you can install them on other PCs/Consoles, and if you feel nostalgic for a game years later, chances are, the digital download will no longer exist, but you can still install the physical copy!

My sister came into my room to play my Mega Drive again, which I don't mind, she gave up, again, because she wasn't doing as well as usual, so I had a go, and done even worse...

Friday 22nd June 2012

I've been told I will get my PC on Monday, hopefully fixed, but they haven't said otherwise, so that's a good sign, but I'm still not getting my hopes up...

I discovered a Free-to-play game on Steam called "Trackmania Nations Forever", which is a game all about whacky tracks, and the fact you can make your own! I had a go of it, and I loved it! Unlike every other F2P game I've ever played, it doesn't ask you for money anywhere in the game!

I might know where they'd get income then, from their other, more advanced game, Trackmania United Forever, Nations is a Free Trackmania game, everything else is like a mainstream game, a case with a disc, that costs you about £20-£30. United Forever is all of the Trackmania games and expansions put together into one game. After playing and Loving Nations, I'm definitely getting United Forever!

Saturday 23rd June 2012

My sister came into my room and played Sonic 1 for a bit, then gave up, so I gave it a try, and I actually reached Labyrinth Zone Act 2, by far the furthest I've ever gotten, until I got a game over!

I completed Episode 2 of the Ultimate Doom, and the end boss for that episode, is absolutely merciless, I couldn't defeat him no matter what I did, I lost count of the amount of tries it took, not that I counted in the first place.
So I decided, f*ck it! I put a cheat in to get the BFG, and then I completed him my first try... Alright, second try!

I realized it was 3DO next week, and I didn't have a working copy (or even a proper one at that) of Twisted, and that games makes 3DO week, 3DO week, so I went online, and there was only 1 copy left, it was £15, but I made an offer of £10, and not even a minute later, he accepted it, so now I'm getting a proper copy of Twisted! Hopefully it'll arrive before next Sunday...

Sunday 24th June 2012

It was Mega Drive this week at grans, unfortunately, I only had one controller, so I brought along the Sega Master System controller, in hopes that it would work... It didn't.

I was playing a bit of Mortal Kombat for a while first.

Then I played a bit of Aladdin, still trying to figure out the level skip cheat I knew of years ago, it seems it's activated when I press A, B, B, A, while rocking the D-pad, but it doesn't do it when I leave it alone or hold it in any direction.

Then Giancarlo played Streets of Rage for a bit, he reached the boat level before getting a game over.

Then Steven came in a while later and played Spiderman, and couldn't get past the first level.

Then he played Bart vs. the Space Mutants, same thing there, couldn't get past the first level.

Then he played Micro Machines 2, he played a lot of races before getting bored. We have something new to say during the countdown of that game, while it counts down, in rhythm with the countdown, we say "This-Game's-Great!"!

Steven decided to let someone else play a game, so Giancarlo then played Sonic 2, because we couldn't go through Mega Drive week without playing that, no really, we couldn't!

While he was playing, he mentioned that once he gets a job, he's getting an Xbox 360, and he also mentioned he's getting a computer as well.
I thought "What's the point?", I mentioned he could just get a gaming PC, sure it may cost more to get a gaming PC than a console, but you're going to buy a console and PC anyway, it doesn't cost much to get a PC that can play all the modern games and PC games are generally cheaper than their console counterparts to pre-order and get brand new the day a game comes out. (Sometimes with £15 in difference!)
Besides, me and Steven play mostly on the PC now, so it'd be awesome if all 3 of us did!
It's his choice, I know, but I'd go for PC gaming if I were him, but then again, no one's like me.

He reached the Casino Stage Act 2, but then Giancarlo had to go, so Steven took over, and reached Hill Top Zone Act 2 before we left.

I bidded for an item of "Ultimate Quake!" for the PC, basically, that's the first 3 quakes (including 3 arena) for I think modern OS PCs, luckily, no one else placed a bid on it, I wouldn't think anyone would, these days, if anyone who's not me wanted a PC game, they'd get it on Steam, not me, I hate digital download games and try to avoid them as often as possible, luckily, I don't need to download anything to play Quake 1, 2 and 3 Arena any more!

Next week is 3DO week, it's time to land on the Challenge Square!

Retro Diary - 20/5/12 - "'Lawl!' *Pique face*"

Dear Diary,

Not much happened this week.

It was Xbox 360 week this week, me, my brother; Riccardo, and my cousins: Giancarlo and Steven, played a 4-player match of FIFA 12, it was me and Riccardo as Barcelona against Giancarlo and Steven as a team called "Lods", I think they're Portuguese, I could be wrong. The first half ended 3-1, I think.

After the first half, Steven's big brother took over Giancarlo, and scored against us. We scored 2 back, so the match ended 5-1.

We had another match, this time it was me and Riccardo as Bayen Munich against Steven and his brother as Manchester City, for both halves, we tied, and went to extra time, where they scored against us, and won.

After that, Steven was constantly playing Halo with my little brothers, who are, dare I say, Halo junkies.

After that, we left, not a whole lot happened this week, I never though I'd say this, but I hope PS3 week will be more fun.

Retro Diary - 18/3/12

Dear Diary,

Hardly Anything Happened this week, apart from of course Sunday, but even then, we hardly did anything.

On Sunday, it was Mega Drive week, unfortunately, I brought along a bad display cable, to the picture quality was awful, just barely playable, though. It was so bad, it put off my cousin, Giancarlo from playing it, and he loves the Mega Drive.

Since it was Mega Drive week, I thought we'd pretend that it was the old years when we played it, 1998, alright, the Mega Drive was about dead by then, but that was when we had the Mega Drive.

The first thing we, or rather I played was Aladdin, and while playing it, I rediscovered an old cheat I used to use all the time to skip levels, just in case there's anyone reading this playing through the game wanting to complete it without cheating, I won't tell you the cheat code.

Then my brother played Sonic 1, then Monaco GP, both of which were on a 6 in 1 cart by Sega themselves, I also played Streets of Rage for a while, I got the furthest I've ever gotten in the game my whole life! Too bad I lost count how many stages I completed.

Then my other cousin, Steven, played Sonic 1 himself, he claimed he completed the game on Xbox Live Arcade version and was a master at the game. Problem for him was, this isn't the Xbox Live remake, this was the original, no save feature, harder difficulty, and a proper controller, which he's probably not used to. He didn't get very far, I don't even think he passed Green Hill Zone!

He then played Revenge of Shinobi, which was also on the 6-in-1 cartridge, he reached the first boss, further than I ever have, but then again, he activated the unlimited shurikens cheat.

Then he played Sonic 2, he had the same claims with this as with the first game, completed Xbox Live Version. He got a little farther on that than Sonic 1, but not by much, he only got Chemical Plant Zone Act 2 I think.

After that, the Mega Drive was just there collecting dust, so I thought I'd just pack it up and leave, as by that time, my family got the booze out, as it was my sister's birthday, I left before anyone got drunk, I hate it when people do that.

It was disappointing this week, hopefully, next week will be better, where we'll be playing the 3DO!

Retro Diary - 11/3/12 - Xbox 360-I mean PS3 week.

Dear Diary,

I had a quiet week this week, not much happened even on Sunday.

On Friday, as I mentioned then, I got 3 Sonic Albums from G-Force, all 3 New & Sealed for £32, and then I looked them up online, and they were about £40-£70 each used! Wow, I got one heck of a bargain!

If you want more details about this, Click Here.

On Sunday, it was PS3 week... or at least it was meant to be, however, my brother, Riccardo and his infinite wisdom forgot the AV cables, and my younger brother played his Xbox 360 on the TV instead.

My cousin, Giancarlo showed me what he recently purchased stuff from Fopp, if you don't what that is, it's a UK multimedia store owned by HMV, I think. One of the stuff he purchased was actually a Vinyl record album, he said he was thinking of getting a record player, then we were talking about them for a while, most notably the sound of the pin touching the record and the sound it makes throughout the song, I thought I was the only one to love that sound, but I was wrong!

I'm also thinking of getting a record player, particularly one of ION's players, they have made a VCR that I have, and it's great, you can record VHSes to your computer and even record whatever is plugged into the AV ports at the front of it, meaning I can properly record game footage! I'm hoping their record players will have similar features, plus, they're the only company I think that still makes new ones, so there you go.

We didn't do much else that's related to what this diary's about, except perhaps we were playing Robot Wars with RC cars my brother got his birthday.

Next week would've been Wii Week, but we all decided to skip and start again, next week will be going back to the blast processing days!

Retro Diary - 4/3/12 - "Oh no, I got the letter 2!"

Dear Diary,

On Thursday, I was woken up an hour early for college by accident, usually, since I had that much extra time, I would usually doze off, but I wasn't that tired, so I decided to play some Crazy Taxi 2, and I completed Crazy Pyramid, which is meant to be the sequel to Crazy Box from the original.

On Friday, my friend, Jamie, came over to my house to play FIFA on my new beast of a PC, he even brought his Xbox 360 controller, since I got my receiver, and the was okay, but it wasn't as fun as I hoped to be, I don't remember the match details, but I'm sure it involved both of us being Barcelona and him thrashing me by quite a margin.

Then we gave PES 2012 a try, and it was surprisingly fun, a lot of fun, it was quite frantic, it was very fast paced, and it was more realistic in a sense that if you shot from midfield, in FIFA, they'd be no chance of getting in, but there's a chance in PES, it also had better commentary, menus and a far better atmosphere, don't get me wrong, FIFA 12 is still a fun game, but PES is far better in my opinion.

In the first match, Jamie accidentally went as Real Madrid (he was a Barcelona supporter), and I went Barcelona, so it was an El Classico, in the end, we drew 2-2, and it went to extra time, where I think I won 4-3, we played a few matches afterwards, wher4e he ended up winning by quite a bit.

Then we played a game of NBA 2K12, we only played one match, which I won.

Then we played PES 2012 again, I probably lost a few more matches, then Jamie and my brother, Riccardo "Red Card" Cafolla had a game of FIFA 12 on the PC, and then on the PS3, both games Jamie won, but it was close, at least compared to his usual results when playing me.

Then we tried out PES 2012 on the PS2, it was a good game least time I played it, before I got it on PC, but playing it now, it seems kind of crappy, it's still a good game, it's nostalgic because the gameplay is exactly the same as the old PES games on the PS2, but with an updated roster, me and Jamie had a game at first, then Riccardo "Red Card" Cafolla to take over me for a good few matches while I was busy doing stuff on the PC, can't remember what, though, probably working on my game.

After that, he tried out the PC version, and to my surprise, because he's pretty much a FIFA fanboy, he described the PC version as "Retarded but fun" and even mentioned that he might consider getting it for the PS3, I told him it wasn't so bad...

When we playing all of the above, he kept getting penalties and yellow/red cards the moment he got the ball off of Jamie, because of this, we gave him new nicknames, including; "The Walking Penalty", Riccardo "Red Card" Cafolla, "The Walking Red Card", Riccardo "Referee's Consequences" Cafolla and "The Red Card Magnet".

Then me and Jamie had another game of NBA 2K12, and I somehow lost, Basketball is meant to be my sport, the sport I follow! I guess you can't win everything... or my case anything...

Then we had another game of FIFA 12, which, big surprise, I lost. After that, I felt tired, so I just went to bed, watching Monsters Inc. before sleeping, my friend ended sleeping a quarter of the way through, though.

The Next Morning, on Sunday 3rd March, we had a game of PES 2012 on PC, and I lost, again. I'm awful at these games...

Then Riccardo "Red Card" Cafolla played a 2 games with Jamie, which Jamie won 8-1 apparently, but then he came back the next match with a 4-3 win. So they played one more match as a decider, and Jamie won 3-1. In all matches, it was Manchester City and Manchester United played by Jamie and Riccardo "Red Card" Cafolla respectively.

After that, Jamie was taken home.

In short, here's what we played, in the order we played them:
  • FIFA 12 [PC]
  • Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 [PC/Games for Windows]
  • NBA 2K12 [PC]
  • FIFA 12 [PS3]
  • Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 [PS2]

We had a great time that night, well, at least I did.

On Sunday, it was Xbox 360 week and Steven, my cousin's birthday weekend, or should I say his "Un-Birthday". "Finally!", my cousins would say, "New games!".

While I was waiting until we went there I decided to start a new game of Pokémon Red and played that a little bit before we went, didn;t get far though, but I'll play it again.

Me, Steven and my other cousin, Giancarlo, started off by playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and I was actually doing alright in it, my death-kill ratio didn't appear to be as big as usual, I even went second on both matches we played, the game's still not great though in my opinion.

Then me and Steven played Tony Hawk's Underground 2, because we didn't have much time, and we needed our horse of the week, the game ran seriously slow on the Xbox 360, but it was playable enough, this week, the "horse" was: bb2235ego!

We actually played two matches, when we playing them, when one of us got a number, it said "(User) got the letter 2!", Oh no!

The first match I won, 8-1 to me! I felt kind of sad about that, though, being it was his "Un-Birthday" and all, I hope he would've got a win, so he challenged me to another game, but I warned him, if I won, that would one more in my score, he said he would be okay with that.

...and what do you know, he actually won! 8-2 to me still, but at least it's a little less one-sided, just a little, though. I told him to start practising on Tony Hawk's Pro skater 3, because I'd love a challenge, I don't want this whole horse of the week thing to be one sided, so hopefully he'll take my advice and practice on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, as he has it as well.

After that, we were going to play Robot Wars Extreme Destruction on the Xbox, which worked fine before on the Xbox 360, but it wasn't compatible, odd, why wouldn't Microsoft remove compatibility from their console, it seems kind of stupid, doesn't it? They're probably trying to copy Nintendo, hoping to copy their success, if that's the case, Microsoft clearly don't know what consumers like or hate.

So we decided to play Raw 2 on the Xbox instead, and we had a great time laughing at the game as always, me and Steven played the first 2 matches, then Giancarlo joined in for the next 2, then we had to leave.

Steven gave me a couple of his old PS1 demo discs me and him were talking about last week (I mentioned it on last weeks entry), I've only tried McDonald's Disc 4, and it brought back so many memories!

In short, here are the games we played, in the order we played them:
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 [Xbox 360]
  • Tony Hawk's Underground 2 [Xbox]
  • WWE Raw 2: Ruthless Aggression [Xbox]

Next week is PS3 week, Riccardo "Red Card" Cafolla would be happy to hear that...

Retro Diary - 19/2/12 - "Crossbows are the best!"

Dear Diary,

This week was so-so in terms of how busy it was, but the things that happened were great!

On Monday, I was having trouble with my PayPal account, and my mum invited Steven over to fix the problem, after that was done, my brother wanted to help him with Portal 2, after he did that, we decided to play a couple of games.

First we played the game that redefined the fighting genre, the classic Rise of the Robots on the Amiga CD32, to my recollection, I won a match then he won one, then we quit.

Then we played Mashed: Fully Loaded on the Xbox, I lost count on who won and by how many wins, but who cares, it was fun!

I go to College every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, I'm telling you this because me and my friend always go to McDonald's for lunch on all days, as greedy as it sounds, I can do that and still lose weight, after we eat our McDonald's one day, we had plenty of time before the next class/lecture starts, so we just decided to explore the Toy R Us that was nearby, and we found an Xbox 360 on display and it had Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 demo in it, since then, we always have a match of that after McDonald's.

Also, Toys R Us recently started selling the new Beyblades, it even said you could battle inside, so we went in to where the arena and blades were meant to be, and there was nothing on it, however, my friend looked under it, and found the stuff, they were hiding it, I guess it was to avoid theft, so he pulled it out and put it on the table, and we had a few battles. I'm guessing this will also be on our schedule between lunch and the next class/lecture, I hope so, I loved Beyblade back in the day, and the new Metal Fight ones are fun as well, although they're a bit hard to get the blades on the launcher, they keep falling off.

On Sunday, it was Xbox week at our grans, and I realised we done Gamecube and Xbox in the wrong order, as the Gamecube actually came out after, some retro fan I am!

Anyway,we only really got to play 1 game, which was 007: Nightfire, which was fun as always, but afterwards, we were actually going to the cinema to see the new Muppets Film, which was brilliant by the way.

So because we only got to play one game, we're extending Xbox week to next week, to make up for it.

So yeah, next week is, I guess you could call it Xbox fortnight part 2.

Retro Diary - 12/2/12 - "Let's NOT do this!"

Dear Diary,

Not much has happened this week, apart from the obvious.

This kind kind of off topic to my usual stuff, as it's not only about a newer platform, but about something I'm making rather than playing.

I've officially started production on my upcoming project, I'm getting someone (someone I've known for a couple of years, I trust him.) to do the 3D models for the game, while I model the environments for the game, once he's done, and he says they shouldn't take too long to make, I'll start development on the actual game.

I'm going to try my best to make this a great game, although I'm trying not to go overkill, because this will be my first proper game, released on Steam and Xbox Live as well, I want to give off a good first impression.

I will be making a weekly development blog, but not on here, I'll be doing it on the Gamerstorm website, when it's back up, until it does, you should check out the blog, all updates are posted on that as well, be sure to check the now and again.

On Saturday, me and my sister decided to watch Spiderman and Spiderman 2.1, which is an extended version of Spiderman 2, as you might've guessed.

We never finished the second film, we're going to finish it off another time...

It was Gamecube week at gran's this week, the Gamecube is probably the only console all of us (me and my cousin, Giancarlo and Steven) have and have games, controllers, etc. for, so every Gamecube week, we have a vast amount of games to choose from!

We- or rather I first played a few games on the Game Boy Player, Super Mario Deluxe and WWF Betrayal, not much worth of note happened in either game.

Then we played F-Zero GX, originally, it was just going to be me and Giancarlo playing it, but Steven joined in the last minute, we played had a few races, all of which I came last in...

Then we popped in Mario Kart: Double Dash and again had a couple of races, both of which to my recollection where I came second, the second race I was about to win, but got distracted literally at the finish line, and Steven I think managed to overtake me and won.

Then we played the game that wouldn't make Gamecube week, Gamecube Week without playing, and that game is Mario party 6, we wanted to just make it 5 turns, as our last game, which was 20 turns, lasted about 2 hours! However, the minimum you can have was 10 turns, so we went with that, we played a 4-player game; Me, Giancarlo, Steven, and my 8-year old brother. It lasted a long, long time, but not as long as it usually does, thankfully. I ended up last again, I see a trend coming on here...

Giancarlo had to leave soon after, so it was just me and Steven, so naturally, we popped in a Tony Hawk related game, and that game this week was Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX 2, the word was paab77ag8g!

We had a game before this one, but the game glitched out, and I had to hard reset it, not even the reset button worked! Thankfully, my it didn't ruin my Gamecube!

In our proper match, it was surprisingly close, in the end, I got 9 letters, and he got all 10, so he lost. Steven is the horse of the week, a paab77ag8g! It's 6-1 to me!

We left after that epic match!

Next week is Xbox week, hopefully, we'll play the last of the obscure non-Tony-Hawk type of Tony-Hawk games; Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer! As I have it on Xbox, of course, not without having a game or two of 007: Nightfire first...

Retro Diary - 22/1/12 - "Come here square fists!"

Dear Diary, I totally forgot to write notes for this, so everything written here beyond Monday will be totally out of recall.

On Monday my sister came over to play my Mega Drive, big surprise, eh? However, she, or rather we, I was playing a bit as well, almost completed it, we reached Death Egg Zone, by that point, I was shaking in excitement, my heart rate was going three times it's normal speed, I'd be sweating if I were the type to sweat, this was it, one the first games I've ever played, the game that always got me p*ssed off, the game that I- as a child- played for hours upon hours on end, but never got far, it was time to finally finish off a childhood game, a game that always won, to get past a very large obstacle, to jump over a very high hurdle, I- sorry we, were going to beat Sonic 2 once and for all!... I suck at build-ups...

...and we died, lost all of our lives and continues, bummer...

On Wednesday, I was staying over at a friends house to watch the El Classico, while we were waiting for it to start, we had a few games of FIFA 12 on Xbox 360 and a couple of match of Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 for the same console.

I pretty much lost all of the matches we had of both games, I have no choice but to blame the Xbox 360 controller, I'm usually good at both games on PS2, usually...

After the El Classico, which I enjoyed by the way, we watched The Emperor's New Grove on VHS, then we went to bed.

On Saturday, I got a new TV! Well, not exactly new, my brother had it before, but only since Christmas, so it's still relatively new, and I came across a problem, with the PS1, the the TV takes about a minute to find out what type of picture it uses, so by the time it shows a picture, it's well into the intro or the Press Start screen, it's not a big problem, since it gives off a great picture when it finally shows, but I'd love to get it fixed.

Other than that, I love it! It gives off a great picture to anything connected and I got a HDMI cable for my blu-ray player, and it gives off a great picture, it even does 1080p... but it's only 14-inch, so it doesn't make a massive difference.

On Sunday, it was Nintendo 64 week at grans, I played a fair bit of Turok before my cousin, Steven finished his lunch and then we played a bit of Goldeneye, then we played a bit of Perfect Dark, and to finish off, we played Mario Kart 64. Nothing much happened.

While we were playing Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, we made up playful insults related to the graphics, for example: "Come here square fists!", "Take that Pyramid hands!" and "You can run forever cuboid legs!".
Games we played:
  • Turok
  • 007 Goldeneye
  • Perfect Dark
  • Mario Kart 64

Yeah, nothing much happened from recall. Next week, we'll be Dreamcast week, Chu Chu Rocket!

Retro Diary - 15/1/12 - "BEEEEEAAASSSSTTTTTT... Robots!"

Dear Diary, sorry I'm late with posting this week, you'll find out why later on.

On Tuesday, My sister came to my house to play my Mega Drive again, she was playing the one I found in grans the week before, like I said, it works better than my other Mega Drive, because it doesn't need the power cord to be plugged in at a certain angle in order to play it.

You guys wont believe this, but she didn't even know how to spin dash in the game! I can understand if she's totally new to the game, but she played it when it came out all those years ago with our older cousins, so I would've though sometime then she would've learned, but apparently not. Oh well, she knows now.

She got to Oil Ocean Act 2 before she got a game over. She had 6 lives and 3 continues and managed to lose them all at that zone. *tuts*

She decided to play through it all again, she's dedicated I'll give her that.

She reached Metropolis Zone Act 2 this time.

Then she decided to play through it all again!

She reached Oil Ocean Act 2, the exact same spot - the boss - before her 3rd game over.

Later on in the day, she came back for a 4th try, this time she reached Green Hill Zone Act 2 before deciding to stop playing.

She later returned though for a 5th play though, well technically 4th, but whatever.

She reached a record of 15 lives! She reached Mystic Cave Zone Act 1 before she had to leave for the final time.

I think I can safely say that after all of that, the Mega Drive found in the closet/cupboard is in full working condition!

On Wednesday, me and my cousin, Steven, had another Robot Wars session on Garry Mod.

After a few battles, we decided to try and build new robots, but neither of us had an idea that worked, so we gave up. I swear Steven's idea of connecting an office chair to a sentry gun with a 100ft pole was going somewhere...

On Thursday, my sister returned to play some more Mega Drive... while I was at college! She said she reached Living Fortress zone when I was away.

When I was there, she reached Oil Ocean zone Act 1.

Her goal it seamed from that point was to get as many lives as possible.

On her second attempt, or at least the 2nd I've seen, she reached Aquatic zone Act 1 with 15 lives before she had to leave.

On Friday, College ended early, but I didn't have my mobile phone, so I couldn't tell my mum that so she couldn't pick me up, so since I had a couple of hours to kill, I went over to my friends house for a few hours.

We played a could of El Classico on FIFA 12, if you don't know what "El Classico" is, it's the Spanish old firm, Barcelona vs. Real Madrid.

Unfortunately, my friend had taken all of Real Madrid's good players and put them on Barcelona, so I didn't stand a chance.

So I went Bayern Munich (Spelling) and he went Milan, and you won't believe this, but I actually scored not 1, but 2 goals against him! He did equalise in the second half and scored a 3rd goal, but I got him back with a 3rd goal from my team, then he scored again, then the matched ended, it was surprisingly close!

We had a rematch, and this time, he scored a goal against me earlier on, and then... no one scored since, and the match ended 1-0.

This guy has been collecting FIFA games for years, so he's most likely an expert at them by now, I'm just a new comer, and I surprisingly came close on both of our balanced matches!

We then watched Aladdin on VHS, it's my first time watching it believe it or not, and I really enjoyed it!

Afterwards, we decided to have another game of FIFA 12 again, but then I had to go.

On Saturday, my Sam & Max DVD boxset finally arrived, after 2 months of waiting! I watched it all at once, it was worth the wait! Brilliant show!

Steven came up to my house, we played a few games in my room, we first tried out Hi-Octane, and it was kind of fun, but it was drag, because the game's circuits have too many laps, seriously, some even go up to 12 laps! They;re not short either, they're pretty long! So it kind of drags on after a while, but for a game that only took 8 weeks to build, it's pretty fun!

We might've played wipE'out 3: Special Edition, but neither of us are sure about that.

Then we played WWF War Zone for the Nintendo 64, like ECW Hardcore Revolution, which we played on the Dreamcast and which is also made by Akklaim, the game is so bad, it's awesome! So we had a couple of matches of that.

We were going to hook up our laptops, he brought his over, to play Garrys Mod on multiplayer using LAN, but we didn't have time, he had to go.

In summary, here are the games we played:
  • Hi-Octane [PS1]
  • wipE'out 3: Special Edition [PS1]*
  • WWF Warzone [N64]
* = We think.

On Sunday it was PS1 week, my cousin was playing a few games of Vib Ribbon, we were about to pop in Tekken to play it, but it wouldn't load that or any other games since, my PS1 just died on me... and that was why I never posted my Retro Dairy on Sunday

Luckily though, I guess, me and Steven brought our laptops to keep us occupied, we wanted to try our Robot Arena 2 multiplayer, if know what that is, it's a Robot Combat game released only in America, however, alot of people in the UK own it due to the popularity of Robot Wars, in fact I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if most of the copies the game sold are in the UK now!

Anyway, we found out that although you need the disc to boot it up, you can take it out after it's loaded, and it would still function perfectly, so we ran the game on both of our laptops, connected each others laptops using a cable to play LAN multiplayer and surprisingly, it worked! So we had a few games, then we left.

In between games, we chatted in the built-in chat system in the robot selection screen, and we were quoting videos from KSIOlajideBT's videos, but adapting them to Robot Combat, the most notable of these was parodying his "Beast" videos, where he talks about good but unknown football players in FIFA: "Shut up and welcome to BEAST! Where we talk about BEEEEEAAASSSSTTTTTT... Robots!"

On closer inspection, and recall, it turns out that I made a mistake, you see, I have 2 PSones, and I was bringing the other one every other week because the one I brought broke, the whole time it was broken, so all of my grieving and being a little mad and stressed all went to vein, well, at least there's not much to be sad about.

I cleaned the lens anyway, just to see if I can bring it back to life, popped in Tekken 3, and it actually kind of worked again, I say kind of, it loaded the intro and menus just fine, but couldn't load the actual game. At least I'm making progress, eh?

In summary, here are the games we played:
  • Vib Ribbon [PS1]
  • Robot Arena 2: Design and Destroy [PC]

So, next week is N64 week, the return of Slapper action in 2012!

Retro Diary - 8/1/12 - "He is okay, Wo-mon!"

Dear Diary, I've had a busy week this week...

On Wednesday, my cousin, Steven, came over to fix a problem with my mum's Paypal, so I can get a copy of one of the old McDonalds demo disc 1! I invited him up to my room to play a few games.

First, we had a few game of the infamous Rise of the Robots on the Amiga CD32, being that he was the 2nd player, he got to choose the opponent, I couldn't. I had to stick with the Cyborg.

The first match, he went as the Sentry droid, a.k.a. "Rook", he won that match.
The second match, he went as the Soldier droid, a.k.a. "War", I won that match.
The third match, he went as the Builder droid, a.k.a. "Ape" or "Prime-8", it turns out that Ape didn't have any aerial attacks, and since the game usually consists of them to win matches, that was a bad thing, I won the match because of that.
The forth match, he went as the Sentry droid again, I won again.
It was 3-1 to me, yes!

Next we played World Tour Racing for the Atari Jaguar CD, it turns out that the control setting only apply to the first player, even if it's the second player choosing them, that sucked! We raced in England, which didn't look like England at all. However, we were amazed at the graphics, they were great for the Jaguar, it was a fully 3D textured-polygon game, which is rare for a Jaguar game.

Next, Steven had to help my brother in Portal 2, but as well as do that, he showed us a secret level, which was cool!

We then went on Garrys Mod on my PC, because I said to him the face poser in the game didn't work, it turns out they didn't work with the Team Fortress 2 characters.

We then had another race at World Tour Racing, nothing to say about that.

Then we had a game of wipE'out 64 for, what else, the Sega Saturn!... Wait, that's not right...

2 player in the game was surprisingly smooth and fast, I might even go as far as to say it runs faster than single-player!

After that, he had to leave.

In short, here are the game we played:
In the order we played them:
  • Rise of the Robots [CD32]
  • World Tour Racing [JagCD]
  • Portal 2 [360]
  • Garry's Mod [PC - Steam]
  • wipE'out 64 [N64]

The next day, my sister came over, and she discovered that I had a Mega Drive, she had, what is called, a "Nostalgia-gasm", which means, she got a memory triggered of something she remembers dearly, and get exited to play it again. She said for a joke that she wanted to move back into the house.

I popped in Sonic 2, and she pretty much played it all night.

It was probably the first time my Mega Drive had been booted up in years!

She said that she's going to buy a Mega Drive off eBay, and asked me if she does, if I would go over to her house to help her set it up, I said I would, it wouldn't be a problem.

She took a photo of the Mega Drive on Facebook, and said it was okay if I posted it here, so here you go:

She got to Zone 3 Act 2 before she had to leave.

Friday was an awful day, it was the day my Sega Saturn died, I was trying out Sonic 3D, and it didn't read it, so I cleaned the lens, the outside, pushed the lens to the top, left it for a few hours, even opened it up to see if the drive was connected properly, but none of those worked, it wouldn't read anything...

R.I.P. my Sega Saturn, 2008 - 2012... Oh well, time to find another on Amazon and eBay.

On Saturday, me and my cousin, Steven, were having a Robot Combat battle on Gmod, can can find more info on that here.

Today, at Grans, it was 3DO week, and it wasn't as fun a I hoped, but I had a good time nonetheless.

We started off by playing Corpse Killer, which is one of those it's-so-bad-it's-good FMV games, my cousin, Steven got up to a fortress level of sort until it became too hard, not in the challenging way, they just threw too many zombies at him, most of which were invulnerable to bullets, which isn't fair!

If you didn't know, Corpse Killer is an FMV game that tried to be a rail shooter, but fails miserably, the main protagonist, apart from your character, is a one-dimensional stereo typical Jamacan man, who's always saying stuff like "Foo-pah!", "He is okay, Wo-mon!", there's a female character by the way, who has no personality whatsoever, at least not that I've seen.

Next, he played a race in The Need for Speed, not to much to say about it, except while he was playing it, we were writing that Gmod article I linked to above.

Then we played Twisted, we never finished the game, we had to leave before we could, but we enjoyed it.

In summary, here are the game we played:
In the order we played them:
  • Corpse Killer
  • The Need for Speed
  • Twisted: The Game Show

I had a great week this week, next week was supposed to be Saturn week, but as we know, my Saturn died, so we're skipping to Playstation (1) week!

Retro Diary - 28/11/11 - "Are you ready to press a button? Then let's go!!"

Dear Diary,

Sorry I was late, I didn't have any time to write this weeks entry yesterday, I had to get up early the next day, personal reason, I'd rather not mention.

I had a fairly busy week this week, but I need to write notes down from now on, because I forgot the order these events happened.

Throughout the week, I have been revisiting old games that I had in my 'collection' which I completed ages ago, but was tempted to do again, Timesplitters 2, the Tony Hawk's Underground, Tony Hawk's Underground 2 and Tony Hawk's American Wasteland.

I've still to play the latter of the list as I'm in the middle of Underground 2, I and if you must know, I'm playing the Gamecube version, I've never played that one, I completed the first Underground on PS2, and after playing the Xbox version before... wow, I have to say, the PS2 version looks kind of rubbish, as for the Gamecube version, I've never played that, so I can't comment on it.

I was playing Timesplitters 2 on PS2, but while I was on that, I went to my cousins house, and we played through the Xbox version it there, so I didn't see the point in completing it on PS2 if I've more-a-less seen everything. Alright, I lie, we only went through a couple of levels, but you get the idea.

While I was at my cousin's house, we played some games, mostly on N64.

I brought a few games with me in case we got bored, just as well we did I guess, but we had a problem with the N64, it wasn't able to save or load data from cartridges, so when I put in Ridge Racer 64, it said the memory had gone corrupt, and the data in Perfect Dark was gone too, but when I went back home, and tried them on my N64, the data was still there.

Anyway, that didn't stop us from playing a race or two on Ridge Racer 64, although I was moody the whole way through.

First, we played Tony Hawks Skateboarding on N64, my cousin told me he never played the original Tony Hawk game, I was surprised, he loves Pro Skater 3 and Underground, but never played the first game!? Alright, fair enough, I was like that at first, but eventually I got the whole collection up to Tony Hawks Proving Ground on PS2.

Anyway, we played a few games on Graffiti, and I more-a-less annihilated him, with scored like 12-4!

Then, we had a few games on Hockey on Monster Truck Madness 64, and he got me back, he kept beating me with scores like 6-0! I think I an safely say, I've lost my touch...

Then we had a game of Ridge Racer 64 and tried to play Perfect Dark, but like I said before, the N64 had problems reading the data.

Then we played Timesplitters 2, and like I said, we played through a couple of levels until I had to leave to go back home.
Here are the games I think we played, in the order I think we played them:
  • Tony Hawk's Skateboarding [N64]
  • Monster Truck Madness 64 [N64]
  • Ridge Racer 64 [N64]
  • Perfect Dark* [N64]
  • Timesplitters 2 [Xbox]

Speaking of Perfect Dark, I was also playing games I haven't completed before throughout the week, such as Matrix: Path of Neo [Xbox], Driver 2 [PS1], Burnout [PS2] and Perfect Dark [N64].

Perfect Dark was the only games out of those games I actually completed, I'll go back to the others and complete them eventually, but man did Perfect Dark feel rewarding for one reason, I was given a bonus mission that's mostly about shooting anything that moves! That was alot of fun!

On Sunday, at grans, it was Sega Saturn week, we restarted due a confusion, I'd rather not mention why.

I played a match with my little brothers on Fighters Megamix, of course with a handicap for balance, and they were having an absolute blast, they kept bugging me to play more.

Eventually, I convinced them to try out Sega Rally, they didn't like that too much, racing games, as I've discovered, aren't my little brothers' strong points.

Then they wanted to play the Sonic games I had on the Saturn, so we had a game of Sonic 2 on Sonic Jam, and then we had a couple of races in Sonic R. I actually convinced my uncle to play a game of Sonic Jam with me at Sonic 2, we had fun, although we didn't get far.

Then my cousin arrived, and we had a game of Virtua Fighter 2, then he wanted to watch the Fifth Element, which was coming up on Channel 5. I wanted to play him in a couple of fights every time an ad break starts for 3 reasons:
  1. I wanted some time spent towards playing the Saturn, we didn't spend much time playing for it.
  2. To make the ad breaks seam shorter.
  3. To give the Saturn rests, to keep the Disc Tray and Cartridge slot working, so then we could load my Virtua Fighter 2 data from the Backup Cart, so we can play Virtua Fighter 2.1!
Believe or not, this did all 3 jobs perfectly, it made the ad breaks seam much shorter, we had a blast every time, and the Saturn for the most part, kept working perfectly.

We even gave ourselves a name by the last ad breaks, we called ourselves the "Rapid Virtua Fighter Response Unit", or the RVFRU, because the second the ad breaks came on, we literally rushed to the TV, turned the Saturn on, switched the channel and played a few games! I think we were overall equal in the record, I won alot of the matched, but he won alot as well.

As for the film itself, It was brilliant! I had no interest to watch it before and never pictured myself actually liking it that much, but wow, were my expectations blown out of the water, (get it?) it had a little of everything I wanted, it had alot of funny moments, it had an all star cast, I loved the environments, it had a great atmosphere to it, and the story, although it seamed a bit ridiculous in my opinion, was very good and kept you watching until the end. I'll definitely be getting myself the DVD soon...

During the film, We recognised the actor that played as Ruby Rhod, or at least he was familiar, but we couldn't figure out where we seen him, then I said "He looks and sounds just like that guy from Rush Hour.", then my cousin looked it up on his smartphone (or 'daft-phone' as I like to call it.), and it turns out I was right, he was played by Chris Tucker, who played James Carter in the Rush Hour Films, so that was where we'd seen him!

In a nutshell, Here's what we played:
In the Order I think we Played Them
  • Fighters Megamix
  • Sega Rally
  • Sonic Jam
  • Sonic R
  • Virtua Fighter 2/2.1

Afterwards, I went to my other cousin's house... again, and we were playing FIFA 11 on the Xbox 360.
My brother was playing with my cousin in a match, I forgot the result of that.
Then we had a match, I lost.
Then he a match with my brother again, and my brother lost, with a 8-1 score no less!
After that, we left, we didn't stay very long.

The following day, we were at my old flat, literally, everyone in the family were there, even close friends and old neighbours were there, again, I don't want to mention why.

Good thing I started to keep notes, there are thing here I never would've remembered!

Me, my brother and my cousins got kind of bored eventually, so I decided to go to my house and bring a console, but by the time I went there and back by bus, as I have no driving license, they would've gone, so my uncle said he'd drive me there and back, I always feel bad when I get other to do stuff for me like this, but he said he didn't mind, so we agreed that I'd do that.

I asked my cousins what console I should bring, at first, they said "Whatever you want." like they didn't care, then I said, or at least I practically said, "I meant should I bring the Saturn, so we can play Virtua Fighter 2.1 again, or bring the Playstation, as that's next on the list.", then they said, "Bring the Dreamcast!", of course, I happily obliged, I brought the Dreamcast.

When I did, one of my older cousins was intrigued by the fact that I bought the Dreamcast, he lived through that era, (Lucky b*stard, I was too young back then!) and remembers it, and so we played a few 4-player games.

Before that, though, we were talking about games in general, and because I was a retro gamer (Who knew?), we were talking mostly about old games, and I found out that my Mega Drive that I have now, I bought from my cousin: Giancarlo, it was actually his Mega Drive originally (The older cousin, not the one who sold me it.), and he gave it to him before selling it to me, however, he apparently had the Mega CD attachment for it, but I didn't find out what happened to it, I would've loved to have that though!

We were talking about a game on the Mega CD called "Night Trap", which was meant to be a cult classic, but is supposed to be one of those games that's so bad, it's good. After that, we were making fun of how enthusiastic the old FMV videos were, they were over the top, saying that they said stuff like we were going on adventures, when in reality, we were just pressing buttons in a sequence, I made fun of them by saying "Are you ready to press buttons? Then let's go!"!

We have this partial in-joke, I say partial, because I'm p*ssed off at the reason that I made it, basically, when someone mentions the Xbox, I, for a joke, assume that they mean the original Xbox,
let's say for argument someone says, "I'm getting Modern Warfare 3 for the Xbox!",
I say "There's an Xbox version!?",
The conversation would probably go on like:
"Yeah, it's on Xbox and PS3."
"Isn't there also an Xbox 360 version?"
"Yeah, that was what I meant."
"Then why did you say you were getting it for the Xbox?"
"Shut Up! You knew what I meant!"

It does p*ss me off how people just call the Xbox 360, just the Xbox, because I have an original Xbox and still play it today, and I'm probably the only one, but nevertheless it still really annoyed me, so I created the in-joke.

Why am I telling you this Dear Diary? Well, because the cousin who lived through the Dreamcast era. (I need to give these guy nicknames, I don't want to give away their real names.) was talking about something for the Xbox 360, I forgot what it was, but he referred the Xbox 360 as just the Xbox, so I done that In-joke on him, he was confused at first, but then my other cousin explained the in-joke, and then for a joke, he called me a "Retro pedant!".

We played a couple of games of Ready 2 Rumble boxing, a Dreamcast night just isn't a Dreamcast night without that! I was facing Giancarlo at first, I won, then I faced my older cousin (nickname pending), and he won, but he was button bashing, even my youngest brother gave him advice by telling him to keep pressing the Y button, and it worked...

Then we played Chu Chu Rocket, 4-player! It was madness, just as I expected!

Then we played WWF Royal Rumble, just to try it, I didn't expect much out of it, but surprisingly, we had an absolute blast playing it, we played a good few matches of that!

Then me and Steve (Nickname from 007 Nightfire a few weeks back) had a game of Tony Hawks Skateboarding, he said he'd be better than me in the Dreamcast version, I didn't believe him, but then he actually beat me in a game of graffiti, I beat him the next game, then we tied, so it was neck and neck, next time we play will be a decider. I have a feeling though he used an N64 emulator to practice the N64 version... Then we played a game of horse, unfortunetly, you couldn't change the name, so we were stuck with 'horse'. So we played a game, and I lost... wow.

Then we played Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2, we played a game of Graffiti, that I won, then we had a game of horse, but this time, we could change the name, so what did we do, we both moved the d-pad in random directions and kept tapping A, and then came the final result:

I'll be introducing a new feature, perhaps outside the Retro diary as I think it deserves it's own articles, we call it, the "Insult of the Week".

So, without further adieu, we present to you, the Insult of the week is... DCCJJIBCSS!

Hopefully, I'll document the highlights of the matches we will have and make it a new full feature of the Blog, but the score will be backdated.

So the match winner was... Me! That's 3-0 to me! Steve is the DCCJJIBCSS!

Afterwards we played WWF Royal Rumble again, but this time, we did a Royal Rumble Match match, it never seamed to end! It turns out that we needed to eliminate the computer opponents, (Because this game supported up to 9 wrestlers at the screen at one, which is very impressive considering that the newer Smackdown vs. Raw games can only handle 6! So we did that, and all we had to do, was eliminate each other, but once you were eliminated, you can go right back in by pressing start after you've been eliminated, so theoretically, in a 4-player game, it can be never ending! Just as well it didn't but it take half an hour of our lives!

We then had a game of ECW Hardcore Revolution, because it was so much fun to play, because it's so bad, so yeah, we played 3 matched, we had a good laugh out of it.

After that, I had to go, and then wrote the blog entry.

Note to Self: Take notes from now on.

Retro Diary - 6/11/11 - Am I turning... normal?

This week has been crazy!

On Wednesday, my Amiga CD32 arrived, like the 3DO, I've not to actually get it until Christmas, but I had a shot of it to test it, and I have alot things to say about it before playing any of the games...
I thought the Xbox 360's power brick was heavy, I wasn't ready for this, believe it or not, it's even heavier! Honestly, you could probably do reps with it!

The console has the most awkward design ever, the controller ports are on the side, and the power switch is on the back!

The disk tray is massive too, almost the whole left side of the console lifts up, or rather, springs up, you could use it as a catapult!

However, the controller, contrary to what I've heard, actually doesn't feel cheap or plasticy at all, it feels rather well built, actually, and you may not think this from seeing pictures, but the controller is actually pretty big, but fits pretty snug into your hands.

One of the games that came out was the infamous Rise of the Robots, so I decided to try that out, but it wouldn't load, and I kept hearing noises from the disk tray, then I realised that the left side of the tray was a little bit up, it wouldn't go down, when I held it down, it loaded the game, so that was the problem, I use blu-tack to hold it down, if I do that, it works fine, so I was hoping that the seller would give a partial refund, ad it does work, just not properly, but he said if I sent that one back, he'll send us a replacement, so we did that.

Rise of the Robots was pretty much the only game I tried, as I wanted to keep all of the others for Christmas, it was just to test if the console worked anyway.

And Wow, if you thought the SNES and Mega Drive versions of the game were bad, play this, or rather, don't! However, it seams so bad, that it'd be awesome on multi-player!

Overall, although the console has an awkward design, and it isn't very powerful, it can't even do textured 3D graphics like the other consoles of it's generation can, or so I've heard, the console looks so cool, it has some better-than-the-original type ports of classic Amiga games, such as Darkseed and the Lotus Trilogy, and that why I bought one, it was like a best-of package.

Throughout the week, I've been playing FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 and Call of Duty: Black Ops with my brother, and you'll never believe this dear diary, I actually started... enjoying them...

...Yeah, I thought I'd never picture myself enjoying a Call of Duty game, at least not one that came out since 4, but I was introduced to the game modes, Sharpshooter, One in the Barrel, Sticks and Stones and Gun Game... gee, how original(!) Don't be fooled by the names though, they actually add a touch of, get this... unrealism, to the game!

I won't be going into detail about these modes, because I want this to stay as a retro diary, and talking about Call of Duty: Black ops isn't exactly sticking to the title, besides, anyone reading this will probably know anyway.

At grans today, we had a change of plan because the cousin who makes Gamecube week as we know it had to do something for his charity group, so instead, we skipped to Xbox 360 week, and then back to Gamecube week when that cousin returns.

The only Xbox 360 we played was Portal 2, and that was to play the new DLC... but then it turned out you needed to complete the original Co-Op Test Chambers to play in the additional DLC ones.
I brought up some original Xbox game in case we got bored, and I have to say, that was good call, that was exactly what happened, we had a game of Tony Hawks Pro skater 3 first, we had 2 games of graffiti, where you have to trick on objects, and they'll turn into your colour (Blue or Red), and is yours unless your opponent steals it by scoring a higher score on it, I lost both games.

We played a game of King of the Hill afterwards, you have to get a crown and keep it for the time set, in this case, 5 minutes, but your opponents can take it off you by bumping into you or skating past you when you're down, I won that game.

We then played a game called "Horse", where you take turns to beat each others high score, failing to do so, you'll get a letter and whoever gets all the letters first, loses. You can change the name to whatever you want, we just typed random character, from recall, it was "cpccpQQcOz"! It was alot of fun, this round, my cousin, as he was the first player, started off, he bailed it, so I had to set the score, my brother said "Just do a Kickflip.", so I did, but I bailed from doing that, talk about humiliation... In a funny way of course! For a while afterwards, we just played like normal, then one round, I cracked my knuckles, like a piano player and was like "Let's do this!" like I was really determined, then I bailed the first move, and to think, I've played every Tony Hawk game up to Proving Ground, that's how rusty I've become at these games! In the end, I won it, make my cousin, the cpccpQQcOz!

We then tried to play Robot Wars: Extreme Destruction, but the game was too awesome to play on the Xbox 360's emulator, it seams, bummer.

We tried Raw 2 next, and it worked! We played a match, and well, yeah, it was kind of like WWE All Stars, except the gameplay was much better, we just a laugh the whole way through, then we tried season mode, in 2-player, and it was the same there, just a laugh the whole way through! I asked my cousin, the other guy who was playing what he thought was better, he said that for a laugh, WWE All Stars is better, because of the exaggerated moves, but Raw 2 had much better controls and the graphics were better on it, I have to agree, actually.

After that, we went home. In a nutshell, here's what we played:
In the order we played them:
  • Portal 2 [Xbox 360]
  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 [Xbox]
  • Robot Wars Extreme Destruction [Xbox] (Well, we TRIED to play it.)
  • WWE Raw 2: Ruthless Agression [Xbox]
Hopefully, our cousin will be back, so we can have Gamecube week!

Retro Diary - 23/10/11 - "It's like they're on the moon..."

A lot happened this week, at least as far as retro gaming goes.

On Wednesday, my friend came over to my house to have a game of FIFA 12, on PS2!

He thought it was rubbish compared to the Xbox 360 version, well, he said it was completely different and that it didn't fell right, but he said that it might be okay once you get used to the controls, even though I didn't say so, I agreed with him, because after seeing gameplay of the Xbox 360 version, it looked MUCH better.

We then watched some Red Dwarf and some Fawlty Towers, then he was playing Pokémon Pinball on my Game Boy Color, he was playing that for a good while.

We played a few more games, here's the complete list of what we played:
In the order we played them:
  • FIFA 12 [PS2]
  • Pokémon Stadium [N64]
  • Pokémon Pinball [GBC]
  • Half-Life [PS2]
  • Timesplitters: Future Perfect [Xbox]
  • FIFA Football 2003 [PS2]
  • Ready 2 Rumble Boxing [DC]

The most fun we had was playing Half-Life and Timesplitters: Future Perfect, we played both of them for hours and before we knew it, it was time for him to go, so we played a couple of games of Ready 2 Rumble Boxing and then he left.

On Saturday, my Atari Jaguar Memory Track arrived! So now I can save data on my Jaguar CD games. (well, game)

It says on the back it can box "125,000" bytes of data, that's only 250KBs, even back then, in 1996, where you had the fairly small 1MB PS1 memory cards, that was rubbish, and it says also that it can store data from up to "250 Jaguar games" but when I went to the memory track manager, the previous owner had data from 3 games, Battlemorph, Hoverstrike: Unconquered Lads and Myst, and that almost took up the whole cart, only about 100 bytes remained! 250 games my ar*e!

On Sunday, before we went to grans, my brother wanted someone to play him at Co-op in Super Mario Bros. Wii, he asked me first, I didn't want to, so he got our dad to do it.

When I went down for a coke later on, he was still playing and looked so bored playing it, so I thought since I had nothing else to do, I thought I'd take his place, and surprisingly, I enjoyed it, even if it was my brother playing it, he always shouts and makes loud noises while playing it, we got every star-coins, whatever they're called, in world 1 and managed to unlock level 1 of world 9, we didn't complete it, but I'd love to give it another shot!

At grans, it was PS2 week, and since my cousins were still to arrive.

So I decided to play a game of FIFA 12 career mode, when I first played when the game arrived, I didn't like it the framerate was very unreliable and the controls were very awkward (I'm playing on "Be a player" mode by the way), but playing it a second time, I started to really enjoy it, the dynamic camera angles you get when your near a goal I thought were a very nice touch, and I managed to score 2 goals, and it felt very rewarding... and then I got sent off, after "bumping", for lack of a better word, the score to 2-0. Then the opponent team scored not 1, but 4 goals against us! Talk about a bad move, eh? I had to watch the rest of the entire match, the first half wasn't even over yet, I couldn't skip, I could quit, but all progress would be lost and it was count as a retire, it was some of the most boring moments of my life. The score ended 3-4, we lost, and I got the blame, the newspaper said it was my fault and that I was sorry for the loss, bullsh*t!

Then my brother wanted a shot at career mode, but as a manager, so, since I had plenty of memory card space, I let him, and he was playing for about half an hour, despite claiming he hated it,
I told him "I thought you hated this game.",
and he replied "Well, I suppose it's alright when you get used to the controls.",
which was exactly what my friend said, well, assumed, and he was right according to what my brother said.

When my brother started playing, my cousins arrived, and we were talking about how there's still PS2 games being made and making jokes like
"(Cobra!) has probably made a spike in the sales charts for the PS2 version!",
I played along, saying stuff like "Breaking news! Someone bought the PS2 version of FIFA 12!", we had quite a laugh.

I was also mentioning what I wanted to get for Christmas, spent with my EMA money (I know, I'm buying my own presents, sad isn't it? Well, I'm not buy all of them, just most of them.) as I have £300, if saved up, to spend, and I mentioned that I got a 3DO with a few games for just £50! Not bad considering they usually go for £120 with no games, and I told them that I found an Amiga CD32 for just £40, although it had no controller and a EU plug, I can buy both easily for a decent price.

So if you want a CD32, there are 6 available, so get yourself one, just leave one for me, please?

Then, after my brother was done playing FIFA 12, we popped in Timesplitters 2 and played some co-op multiplayer, we only finished 1 level when the cousin I was playing with had to leave.

My other cousin was still there so we decided to play some Timesplitters 1, since he never played it before and was curious as to what it was like, it was kind of boring, I was aware that all of the goals were, get this, then go back, and that it was repetitive, this especially showed in co-op multiplayer, I got bored of it after just 2 levels.

We then had a game of WWE All Stars, just to show him how bad it was, and the game was so bad, it was awesome! Surprisingly, we had a great laugh out of it, because of all of the over the top moves. He said that "It's like they're on the moon!" because of this, and I mentioned that the bad sound effects and lack of music (Yeah, there's no music in the PS2 version.) kind of helped that effect.

So as it turns out, WWE All Stars is like the PS2's Monster Truck Madness 64, it's so horrible, that it's awesome!

Here's the complete list of games we played:
In the order we played them:
  • FIFA 12
  • Timesplitters 2
  • Timesplitters
  • WWE All Stars

On the way back, my cousin was dropping me off my house, due to our car not being there yet, and on the way, we were actually talking about this blog, and he mentioned that he liked the logo at the top and I mentioned that it was outdated, as my collection grew quite a bit since, I got a Jaguar+CD, a Game Boy Color, an N-Gage,
and he added; "...with a 3DO on the way!",
and then I added afterwards; "... and a CD32!",
I was surprised at the fact that it even remotely interested him that I was getting a 3DO, of course in a good way, my only guess it was because I was at one point hosting a competition for a game about what console to add to it, and he entered with the 3DO, I cancelled it due to lack of entries later on, so technically, he was the winner, although the game was cancelled.

That was what I was up to this week, next week is Xbox week, a very underrated console in my opinion, in fact I'm probably the only person in the world to prefer it over the Xbox 360. Hopefully, it will be as fun as this week was.

"Retro" Diary - 9/10/11 - I've been reminded why I started retro gaming in the first place.

Guess what happened this week, absolutely NOTHING.

Alright, I kind of lie, one of my brothers got an Xbox 360, and since getting, he's become a total brat, and got all worked up over nothing.

Another brother of mine got a PS3, and having played that, reminded me why I started retro gaming in the first place... I'll make a standalone page dedicated to it.

Alright, those are pretty big things, but they aren't really "retro", are they?

Nothing really happened on Sunday at my grans, all that happened, was that my brother brought the Xbox 360 and was constantly killing himself in Halo Reach, on purpose.

Retro Diary - 25/9/11 - Pootis title here!

By the way, the title has no relation to the topic itself, I just had nothing else to put on it...

This week was "PS1 week", well, that was it's original plan, but since one of my cousins got Gears of War 3, we ended up playing the Xbox 360 in the end.

However, we did play a couple of PS1 games, literally, just 2 games.
  • WWF Smackdown 2: Know Your Role
  • WCW Mayhem

They were fun, using the Multi-tap to play 4 player and all, but no one was really enthusiastic about it, they started getting enthusiastic when my cousin set up the Xbox 360, playing Gears of War 3 and Call of Duty: Black ops, and that's fine, if they prefer those games, that's alright.

It's just that, no one ever cares about retro games, everyone I know are into modern games like Gears of War 3 and Call of Duty:Black Ops, the type of games that I, quite frankly, hate, I feel so left out!

I can respect other peoples opinion, it's just that I'm the only guy who enjoys retro games, at least in Glasgow, no one else cares, even if I ask them if I want to play something, they'll just say/mumble that I can choose a game, like if they don't care, and want it over and done with.

I guess that's the price to pay for being a retro gamer, people think you're outdated, old fashioned, boring, stuff along those lines. Is it worth it? I'm not sure, I'm not sure at all.

Speaking of old fashioned, I got myself an official multi tap for the PS1, I forgot to mention, for those who don't know what a multi-tap is, a multi-tap is a device made to extend the amount of controller ports of a console, so now that I have one, I can play up with up to 4 other players on the PS1!

I also got Destruction Derby 2, which is in my opinion, much better than the original in my opinion, it has much better physics, and the gameplay's much faster, the only fault I can point out about it, is that you don't turn sharp enough, I have to brake every corner, and that's no exaggeration.

Lastly, I got myself Battlebots: Beyond the Battlebox on GBA, and it isn't as bad as most people put it out to be, although I completed in 2 hours, so although the game's life is short, it's fun, if you're a big fan of robot combat like me and want something new to play, this'll keep you occupied for a while.

That's all there is to this weeks retro diary, hope things get better next week...

Retro(ish) Diary - 14/8/11 - "Thank you for flying with unsafe airlines!"

It's time of the week again folks, it's time for another entry into my Retro Diary.

I haven't got much in the way of retro to talk about, so in a way, this is just a filler.

It was Xbox 360 week this week, and it we just pretty much played shooting games, as that was all my cousin had, not that I'm complaining, we had fun. besides, it wasn't his fault, it's the developers fault for just making shooters for the console.

The games we played:
In the order of when I think we played them
  • Mass Effect
  • Banjo-Tooie
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops
  • Comix Zone
  • Doom
  • Halo Reach (or as we like to call it, "Checkpoint reach", named after the constantly said phrase in the race game mode.)
  • Halo 3 and/or ODST (I forgot which one, I know, I have a terrible memory.)
  • Perfect Dark
I didn't really play the first 2 games, or the 4th one, I just watch my cousin play them, but we played the others, and had a great time, in Halo 3, I managed to jam a scorpion into an elephant in forge mode (ok, that sounded wrong), and then I lifted it up with my brother and cousin in them, in fact, one of them was driving! Then the elephant dropped, and then I said "Thank you for flying with unsafe airlines!", I got that from a friend at high school who used to always say it, he said he got it from a TV show, if you would care to fill me in on where it came from, I'll give you a custard cream!

In Perfect Dark, you know how you can change your character and the head of it, well, I actually found a head that looked just like Tony Hawk! So naturally, I went as him every match.

We also discovered something else, but before I tell you, after playing Licence-To-Kill-Slappers-Only match and seeing the James Bond kill a Russian soldier in the toilet with a slapper in the film, we created an in-joke about it being the most powerful weapons built by man, well, we found out that when you turn on the hurricane fists cheat, you occasionally see the player doing what looks like a slapper, and we usually put it so that that's the only weapon you get, and it kills people, and we concluded that that was why it was so powerful, the fists just warm the body up, and the slapper finishes him/her off.

So next week is "Wii Week", we'll see how that goes.

The day before my birthday, I ordered a copy of WWE All Stars on the PS2, I got the PS2 version for 2 reasons:
  1. I don't have any of the other console the game's on, I play modern games on the PC.
  2. So I can say "I have WWE All Stars on PS2!".
Having played the Wii and PS3 versions of the game, and really enjoyed them, I had high hopes for this game.

It arrived on Friday, I didn't play it that day though, I was busy moving room. When I finally got to play it the next day, boy was I disappointed, it's by far the laziest port of any game I've ever played, it's flooding with problems, but, somehow, I still enjoyed it, alot! Maybe I'll write a review of it someday.

As well as WWE All Stars, I (finally) ordered another copy of Shenmue 2, as Discs 3 and 4 of the copy I have right now don't work, luckily, with this copy, it did! So I've been playing that!

That's all I have for this weeks retro diary, I will hope to see youse here next week!
